Go Stronger, Go Longer with ROCKTAPE
ROCKTAPE is the only Kinesiology tape engineered to meet the demands of all athletes like runners, swimmers, lifters, cyclists, football and basketball players and more. Unlike other products, ROCKTAPE can be used both to apply compression to promote recovery, or decompression to relieve pain and swelling. Similar to the Kinesiology tape in the Olympics and that Lance Armstrong wrote about in “Every Second Counts”, ROCKTAPE is used by professional and amateur athletes everywhere.
Dr Chris has been working with this type of tape for a few years and now has decided to use RockTape exclusively. "It truely is a superior tape. have used it while powerlifting and use it on most of my patients." Dr Chris is excited to be working with a new contact, Dennis Mitchell. Denns is an Olympic Track and Field Coach.
Rocktape, the leader in high performance athletic tape and accessories for active people everywhere, today announced a multi-year partnership with 2008 Olympic hurdler and 2012 Olympic hopeful Damu Cherry. “All of us at Rocktape are very excited to add Damu Cherry to our list of Rockstars, and are especially pleased to support Damu as she makes her run for the 2012 Olympics,” said Greg van den Dries, president of Rocktape. “We have a special passion to support American women aspiring to make their Olympic teams. In addition to Damu, we are also a proud sponsor of Shelley Evans as she strives to make the US Olympic cycling team.”
Cherry competes in the 100 meter hurdles and is currently ranked #2 in the United States and #7 in the world by Track and Field News.“Running is a tough sport, and I sometimes suffer from achilles tendonitis. I’ve tried other types of kinesiology tape, but find that Rocktape wears longer and actually seems to help more with my pain,” said Cherry. “I have lots of competitions this year, and with Olympic tryouts in my future, I want to do everything I can to stay strong and healthy. Rocktape is helping me with that goal.”In 2009, Cherry racked up a series of impressive results: 3rd in semifinal at World Outdoors (12.76); 3rd at USA Outdoor Champs (12.58); 2nd at Nike Prefontaine Classic (12.74); 2nd at Doha (12.72); 1st at Berlin (12.71); 1st at Oslo (12.68); 2nd at Rethymno (12.53). On the road to qualifying for the 2008 Olympic team, she took second at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, and posted two of the four fastest 100m hurdles times in the world with her 12.47 second win in Fort-de-France on May 8 of that year, and her 12.48 second time to win her semifinal at the Olympic Trials on July 7. Cherry’s 12.65 time at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing netted her a fourth place finish.Damu Cherry currently resides and trains in Winter Garden, Florida, and is coached by Dennis Mitchell.Stop in and try a sample or schedule for us to come out to your game or meet and prove how well it works!

| Hamstring Injuries Benefit from Orthotic Support
|
Print-Friendly | Email Article | Article Search |
|
Hamstring Injuries Benefit from Orthotic Support Hamstring injuries are among the most common muscle strains experienced by athletes [1], and of the hamstring group of muscles, the biceps femoris is the muscle which is most often involved. [2] Hamstring injuries can be caused by several factors, all of which respond well to chiropractic care. Unfortunately, many people attempt to treat their own hamstring problems, which can result in poorer performance and chronic conditions.
Hamstring muscle imbalances often contribute to, or may be caused by, pelvic malpositions and spinal subluxations. [3] Chiropractic care for hamstring injuries should include a postural evaluation of the lower extremities, since custom-made orthotic support may be required, especially for rearfoot function.
What Are Hamstrings For? The main functions of the hamstrings are to control knee extension by the quadriceps, extend the hip joint, and flex the extended knee joint. Proper hamstring function is very important for gait efficiency and stability of the knee joint. When the quadriceps muscles extend the knee joint, the hamstrings act as a brake to slow forward movement of the tibia. Hamstrings can be overwhelmed by quadriceps that are too powerful, resulting in a sudden muscle tear during a strenuous activity, such as sprinting. [4]
Joint Control During running, the hamstrings are most active during the last 25% of the swing phase, and the first 50% of the stance phase. [5] This first-half of stance phase consists of heel strike and maximum pronation. The leg muscles, including the hamstrings, function to control the knee and ankle at heel strike and to help absorb some of the impact. A 1999 study showed a significant decrease in electromyographic activity in the hamstrings when wearing orthotics. [6] In fact, the biceps femoris had the greatest decrease in activity of all muscles tested, which included the tibialis anterior, the medial gastrocnemius, and the medial and lateral vastus muscles. Previous studies had already demonstrated a significant decrease in tibial internal rotation [7] and on pronation velocity [8] when using orthotics. The researchers theorized that the additional support from the orthotics helped the hamstrings to control the position of the knee and to absorb some of the shock of heel strike.
Care and Prevention When an athlete presents with a hamstring injury, acute care and return to sports activities at the appropriate time receive top priority. The final stage, though, must consider the need for custom-made, flexible orthotics in order to reduce hamstring stress and prevent re-injury.
Acute care Hamstring injuries are best treated with the PRICE formula: Protection for the injured muscle (an elastic wrap helps prevent further injury); Rest from strenuous activities; Icing to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain; Compression to decrease bleeding and congestion; and Elevation to encourage drainage and prevent lymphatic stasis. Passive stretching and lengthening should be started as soon as tolerable to prevent the muscle injury from healing in a shortened position.
Check for misalignments and imbalances Hamstring strains are commonly associated with spinal/pelvic misalignments and dysfunctions. Because there is often no way to tell whether muscular strain affected the pelvis and spine, or vice versa, both areas must be treated for a complete response. Pre-existing muscle imbalances may also contribute to hamstring strains. The gluteus maximus muscle is often relatively weak, causing the hamstring to work harder to extend the hip joint. This may be found along with an iliopsoas muscle that is shortened or hypertonic on the same side. The tightness of the iliopsoas inhibits the gluteus maximus, thereby placing the hamstring at a disadvantage. [9]
Foundational Support A custom-made, flexible foot orthotic that helps to position the rearfoot at heel strike, absorb some (or most) of the impact, and reduce overpronation can speed healing from a hamstring injury and reduce the possibility of recurrence. Therefore, an important component must be a varus wedge (or pronation correction) under the calcaneus. The use of shock-absorbing viscoelastic materials under the heel is needed to decrease the shock-wave transmission up the leg. And finally, sufficient support for the arches of the foot (especially the medial longitudinal arch) must be included to prevent prolonged pronation in the first half of the stance phase. An orthotic that incorporates all of these factors should be provided to athletes who want to return to full participation in their sport.
Getting Patients Back on Track We now have several reasons to include orthotics in the treatment protocol for hamstring strains. The electromyography investigations have shown that the use of orthotics has a direct effect on the hamstring muscles. By significantly reducing the strain of running, a well-designed, custom-made orthotic can help to speed a full return to sports, and also prevent re-injury.

| Chiropractic for Growing Bodies

Chiropractic for Growing Bodies Our children are perhaps the most precious things we can have in this world. It is a miracle how they are created and we as parents, family members and friends watch these little humans grow up from infancy into adulthood. I have the pleasure of watching my young children get bigger each day.
Of the many choices we make for our children’s welfare nearly every day, the topic of healthcare is likely on the forefront. For example, as a parent there have been times where your child has had a temperature that was high enough to be of concern. How long did you sit there by yourself or with your spouse asking whether or not you should take him/her to the pediatrician? How many times have you questioned the choices that you make for your child’s benefit? As parents it is only natural to agonize over some of these decisions. Luckily, most things work out for the best.
Chiropractic is a facet of pediatric healthcare that is more popular today than it has ever been. I’m amazed by the many reactions I get from parents when they are presented with the idea of having their child adjusted. Some adults have a look of shock, disbelief and even fear, while others nod their heads and relate the stories of how they’ve been adjusted since childhood. No matter what camp you come from, I hope to enlighten you as to why chiropractic is so positive and powerful for children’s health.
When adults get injured playing sports or have common ailments, like headaches, sore muscles, inflammation or other painful conditions, taking aspirin or popping some type of pill is often considered normal. However, when it comes to our kids, the thinking is different. I rarely meet a parent or who wants his/her child to take over-the-counter or prescription medication, unless it’s absolutely necessary. As a society, we tend to be against putting a lot of chemicals or foreign substances into our kids’ bodies. Instead, we look for ways to help our children as naturally as possible.
Chiropractic is a health discipline that offers an alternative to taking drugs and medications. We work with the body’s inborn healing abilities and allow the body to essentially repair itself. By using our hands to gently move or re-align various bones of the body, we address the source of many problems that can lead to pain. People have asked me why a child would possibly need to see a chiropractor. They think children are too young to have any structural problems. Remember, children can have the same types of injuries, problems and pain as adults. The key is to identify problems early and intervene so they don’t follow them into adulthood where they can become even worse.
Children are amazing because their bodies are constantly changing and growing. At birth, a child has 350 bones. By adulthood, their bones fuse together to form a total of 206 bones. From the day they are born to around age 25, all of their bones continue to lengthen and harden. That’s a lot of growing! Their organs and tissues are also growing and learning to perform bodily processes more efficiently. Their muscles, tendons and ligaments start to work as they go from crawling to standing to walking and running. Imagine the amount of work the body is going through to develop and coordinate all of these parts in your growing child. For the most part, the body does a great job keeping things going, but just like adults, kids will fall down or perform activities during the day that place abnormal stresses and strains on their little bodies.
Stress can be placed on children in the same manner it is placed on adults. It could be due to sports, sitting in the car seat for too long, falling down while they are playing, birth trauma or falling out of their crib/bed, to name a few. The important idea here is that children are not always good at letting you know they are in pain or having problems. The key is being able to make observations that indicate when you may need to have your child evaluated by your local chiropractor.
Some children have a difficult delivery. As they pass through the birth canal, their shoulders, heads, hips or legs can get stuck or be placed in awkward positions. In some cases, the mother has tried hard to have a natural birth, but in the end needed a cesarean section. Even C-sections can be physically traumatic to parts of the baby’s body.
When children begin crawling, they start to develop the curve in their neck. They also start developing coordination in their arms and legs. As they move into walking, you start to see them using their limbs to balance and move upright. Early in their lives, you may be able to notice some of the following signs:
• Hunched shoulder on one side or both • Head turns to one side more than the other and your child resists or becomes noticeably uncomfortable when you turn their head to the other side • The hip and leg on one side kicks or moves differently than the other • Toes point inward or outward when your child walks or runs
As children grow older and get into more sporting activities, it is a lot easier to understand when a child is injured or in pain. Even without pain, many of the symptoms discussed above can cause problems with children’s bones, joints and muscles that may not be detected or become painful for years to come. Preventative chiropractic can give a child a solid foundation for the rest of their life.
Did you realize that chiropractic care that works so well for adults, works even better for children? The same treatments we administer to adults are just as safe for children. Ailments that adults commonly come into our offices with happen to children as well. But children heal faster than adults. A child’s immune system is working so efficiently that it takes less time to restore their health.
Chiropractic techniques performed on children are modified so the procedures are gentler for the child’s particular body type. We can also utilize exercises, ice/heat and other home care instructions to make the parents part of the care-giving process.
Chiropractors also have the knowledge to analyze children’s feet to ensure they are properly supporting their bodyweight. By age six or seven, the three arches of the foot have fully developed and we can determine if custom-made orthotics that support all three arches are needed. Thus we can help support ideal development of the whole body.
Chiropractors have long cared for children and now it is being accepted as a viable healthcare choice. Each day, thousands of children across the world are receiving adjustments from chiropractors. It’s a great way of relieving pain, restoring function, and keeping them happy.

Have you been involved in an auto accident or know someone who has? You should be evaluated! What To Do After An Accident If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident you will need to make an appointment for a brief, but thorough, examination. Often, individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents experience minimal or no symptoms for the first few weeks and even months. It's important to not only receive immediate and appropriate treatment for any injuries sustained, but also to document the extent of the injuries, if present.
Failure to obtain a timely evaluation or appropriate treatment for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident may negate your ability to receive monetary compensation for any future medical bills resulting from the accident, negate your ability to receive pain and suffering settlements, and negate compensation for work loss.

| NSAIDs vs. Home Exercise For Chronic Low Back Pain
|
Print-Friendly | Email Article | Article Search |

Japanese researchers have found home-based exercises to be more effective in the treatment of chronic low back pain than prescribed NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). While NSAIDs can reduce inflammation and pain, they are a form of passive care that fails to address functionality issues such as limited motion, muscular weakness and muscular imbalances, not to mention the many negative side effects associated with NSAID use. Home-based exercises are not only natural and far safer, they specifically address functional issues and deficiencies in a proactive manner. And thus, it goes to reason that both men and women (mean age of approx. 42 years) who participated in the home-based exercises versus the NSAIDs during the 12-month study experienced more significant improvements in both reported low back pain and overall disability.

| Vitamin D To Conquer Your Cold

New research indicates vitamin D may be effective at reducing infections and colds. In this new study, researchers found that a group of young military men who supplemented with 400 IU’s (international units) daily for 6 months versus those who supplemented with a placebo experienced a significantly higher likelihood of having no days missed from work due to a respiratory illness. Moreover, of those taking the vitamin D supplement half remained healthy during the 6-month study as compared with approximately just one third of those taking the placebo. While more studies are needed, this new research does appear to indicate some benefits of vitamin D in reducing sickness or at least, the severity of sickness. It should be noted that vitamin D when taken in higher dosages is toxic and negative side effects can and do occur beyond 2,000 IU’s per day.

| Antidepressants Ineffective/Inappropriate For Autism

Antidepressants are commonly prescribed to those suffering from autism. However, past research hasn’t been able to provide evidence that antidepressants are actually useful for those diagnosed with autism. A recent U.S. government funded study reported that antidepressants, more specifically Celexa, was no better than a placebo for improving repetitive behaviors in children with autism. Researchers have now completed a new review of this study along with six other related studies present in the medical literature. Their findings – there was no evidence that antidepressants were any better than a placebo at reducing repetitive behaviors or any other symptoms in children suffering from autism. According to the researchers who conducted this recent scientific review of medical literature, there is no basis for recommending the routine use of antidepressants in the treatment of austism.

| U.S. House Introduces Resolution to Recognize National Chiropractic Health Month
|
Print-Friendly | Email Article | Article Search |
|
The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and the Iowa Chiropractic Society (ICS) today announced that Rep. Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) has introduced House Resolution 1523 (H. Res. 1523)—“to observe the contributions of the chiropractic profession and recognize National Chiropractic Health Month”—in the United States House of Representatives. National Chiropractic Health Month, sponsored by ACA, is a nationwide observance held each October. This year’s theme—“Why Weight? Get Healthy!”—and related activities will focus on how doctors of chiropractic play an important role in preventing and treating obesity. More than 60 percent of adults in the United States are either overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and obesity is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and some types of cancer. There are two factors that are instrumental in successfully addressing weight problems—diet and exercise. Often, people who suffer with weight problems avoid the exercise component due to painful conditions like back, neck and joint pain, and osteoarthritis. That lack of exercise, in turn, causes more weight problems, which adds more strain on the musculoskeletal system, which causes increased pain. It's a vicious cycle! DCs are experts at helping patients reduce such pain naturally, getting patients more active and functional again. DCs also counsel patients on good nutrition, diet and lifestyle advice, in addition to offering expert structural care. “Chiropractic care provides patients with a path to overall wellness through natural approaches to health issues, including weight management,” said ACA President, Dr. Rick McMichael. “We have a growing list of congressional members who strongly support the good work that doctors of chiropractic do to help patients lead healthier lives, naturally. We very much appreciate their recognition and support.” Rep. Boswell was joined by Representatives Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.), Steve King (R-Iowa), Tom Latham (R-Iowa), David Loebsack (D-Iowa), Michael Michaud (D-Maine) and Lee Terry (R-Neb.) in support of the resolution to recognize National Chiropractic Health Month. “We are proud to have Iowa’s entire U.S. House of Representatives Delegation support this important resolution,” said Daniel Garrett, executive director, Iowa Chiropractic Society. “We hope other legislators will sign on and support this effort to improve overall health and wellness across the country.” H. Res. 1523 has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Read the full text of the resolution, and then contact your member of Congress and urge them to cosponsor H. Res. 1523. To learn more about National Chiropractic Health month, visit www.acatoday.org/NCHM. The American Chiropractic Association, based in Arlington, Va., is the largest professional association in the United States representing doctors of chiropractic. ACA promotes the highest standards of ethics and patient care, contributing to the health and well-being of millions of chiropractic patients. The Iowa Chiropractic Society (ICS), based in Des Moines, IA, is the exclusive professional society in Iowa representing more than 800 doctors of chiropractic.
