Sciatica FAQs

Sciatica pain can be devastating, making it difficult to move through your daily activities. At East Lake Chiropractic and Medical Center in St. Cloud, our team is here to get you back on track, one adjustment at a time. We would like to explore what causes sciatica, how chiropractic care can help relieve sciatica pain, and steps you can take to help prevent sciatica from occurring again.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a symptom of sciatic nerve irritation. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. Running from the lower back through the buttocks and down the sides of each leg, issues with the sciatic nerve can cause widespread pain, including lower back pain and upper leg pain.

What Causes Sciatica?

In between each of the vertebrae of the spine are small, soft discs that cushion your movements. Injury and/or the natural aging process can cause discs to deteriorate and become damaged. A herniated disc involves a tear in the actual disc, while a bulging disc results in a misshapen disc that may appear out of place. Both of these conditions can cause pressure on the sciatic nerve, resulting in sciatica symptoms.

Can Chiropractic Care Relieve Sciatic Nerve Pain?

Thankfully, chiropractic care can often help relieve sciatica pain. When you come into our office for your first appointment, our chiropractor will talk with you about your symptoms and discuss a treatment plan. Often, spinal misalignment leads to disc issues, and realignment can help relieve disc issues and related sciatica pain. When your spine is realigned, you may find that the pressure on the sciatic nerve is lifted, relieving your pain.

How Can I Prevent Sciatica From Happening Again?

Ongoing chiropractic adjustments can help prevent recurring sciatica. Your chiropractor may also talk with you about lifestyle changes, such as participating in yoga or losing weight, that may help lessen the likelihood that you'll experience the condition again.
